1. Why We Classify Organisms
With millions of different types of living organisms on Earth, we need a system to make sense of them. Classification is the process of sorting organisms into groups. Early systems were often 'artificial', grouping organisms by simple, observable features like 'has wings' or 'lives in water'. This would incorrectly group a bat (a mammal) with a butterfly (an insect). Modern biology uses 'natural classification', which groups organisms based on fundamental shared characteristics that reflect their evolutionary relationships. This system is based on studies of morphology (outward form) and anatomy (internal structure), and increasingly, on genetic similarities.
