1. Population Distribution: The Spread of People

Population distribution describes how people are spread out across a specific area, such as a country or the entire world. This spread is almost always uneven. Some areas, like fertile river valleys and coastal plains, are 'densely populated', meaning many people live close together. Other areas, such as deserts, high mountains, and polar regions, are 'sparsely populated', with very few or no people. Think of it as the 'pattern' of where people live, which can be seen on a population distribution map.

Examiner insight

Examiners look for answers that describe the pattern of distribution (e.g., 'clustered', 'linear', 'coastal') rather than just stating that some areas have more people than others.

2. Population Density: A Measure of Crowding

Population density is a numerical measure that tells us how crowded a place is. It's calculated by dividing the total number of people in an area by the size of that area. The result is usually given in 'people per square kilometre' (people/km²). For example, Bangladesh has a very high population density (over 1,100 people/km²), while Russia has a very low one (around 8 people/km²). It's important to remember that population density is an average; even in a sparsely populated country, there can be very dense cities.

Population Density = Total Population / Total Land Area

Population Density: The average number of individuals in a population per unit of area, typically expressed as people per square kilometre (km²).

Common pitfall

Dividing area by population instead of population by area, or forgetting to write the units (people/km²) in the final answer.

If the entire world's population lived at the same density as New York City, all 8 billion people would fit into the state of Texas.

In 2023, the population of the United Kingdom was approximately 67.7 million, and its land area is 242,495 km². Calculate its population density to the nearest whole number. [2 marks]

Monaco has a population density of approximately 26,000 people/km² and a population of 39,000. Calculate the approximate area of Monaco in km². [2 marks]

    Substitute the values and calculate: Area = 39,000 / 26,000 = 1.5 km². [1 mark]

3. Factors Influencing Population Distribution

Where people live is not random. It is determined by a combination of physical and human factors. Physical factors are features of the natural environment. Human factors are related to the activities of people. Areas with many favourable factors tend to be densely populated, while areas with many unfavourable factors are sparsely populated.

Physical Factors:

  • Relief (Shape of the land): Flat, low-lying areas are easier to build on and farm, so they are densely populated (e.g., Ganges Valley, India). Steep, mountainous areas are difficult to use and are sparsely populated (e.g., Himalayas).
  • Climate: Temperate climates with reliable rainfall are good for farming and pleasant to live in (e.g., Western Europe). Extreme climates (very hot, very cold, very dry) are challenging and sparsely populated (e.g., Sahara Desert, Siberia).
  • Water Supply: People need water to survive and for farming/industry. Areas near reliable sources of fresh water (rivers, lakes) are densely populated (e.g., Nile Delta).
  • Natural Resources: The discovery of valuable resources like oil, coal, or minerals can attract large populations, even in harsh environments (e.g., oil towns in the Middle East).

Human Factors:

  • Economic: Areas with many job opportunities in factories, offices, and services become population magnets (e.g., major cities like London, Tokyo). Good trade links (ports, roads, railways) also encourage population growth.
  • Social: People are attracted to places with good services, such as schools, universities, and hospitals.
  • Political: Politically stable countries with supportive governments tend to have higher population densities than countries with conflict or instability, which can cause people to flee.

Push-Pull Factors: The negative conditions (pushes) that drive people to leave a place and the positive conditions (pulls) that attract them to a new place.

Examiner insight

High-scoring answers always link a factor to its specific impact on the population. For example, don't just say 'climate'; explain *how* a hot, dry climate makes it difficult for people to live there.

Explain two physical reasons why deserts, such as the Sahara, are sparsely populated. [4 marks]
