1. The Seven Components of a Balanced Diet

A balanced diet is essential for health. It means eating a wide variety of foods in the right proportions to supply the body with all the nutrients it needs to function correctly. Organisms require food for three main reasons: to provide energy for life processes (like movement and keeping warm), to provide raw materials for growth and to repair tissues, and to provide substances to keep the body healthy and fight off diseases. A balanced diet contains seven key components: carbohydrates, proteins, fats (lipids), vitamins, minerals, dietary fibre, and water.

2. Macronutrients: Fuel and Building Blocks

Macronutrients are the nutrients the body needs in large amounts. They are carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.

  • Carbohydrates: These are the body's main source of energy. They are broken down into glucose, which is used in respiration to release energy. Sources include pasta, bread, rice, and potatoes.
  • Proteins: These are essential for growth and repairing damaged tissues. They are made of amino acids. The body uses them to make new cells, enzymes, antibodies, and hormones. Sources include meat, fish, eggs, and beans.
  • Fats (Lipids): These are a rich source of energy and provide more than twice the energy per gram compared to carbohydrates. They also act as an energy store, provide insulation, and protect organs. Sources include butter, oil, and nuts.

Macronutrient: A type of food, such as carbohydrate, fat, or protein, that is required in large amounts in the diet.

Common pitfall

Confusing the primary role of proteins (growth and repair) with their secondary role as an energy source, which is only used when carbohydrate and fat stores are low.

Micronutrients are substances required in very small amounts to maintain health. They are not used for energy but are vital for the body's chemical reactions.

Vitamin D (made by the skin in sunlight, also in oily fish) is needed to help the body absorb calcium for strong bones and teeth; a lack of it causes rickets.
  • Minerals: Inorganic elements needed for various functions. For example, Iron (found in red meat and spinach) is needed to make haemoglobin in red blood cells to carry oxygen; a lack of it causes anaemia. Calcium (found in dairy products) is needed for strong bones and teeth.

4. Fibre and Water: The Unsung Heroes

Although they provide no energy, fibre and water are crucial for a healthy diet.

  • Dietary Fibre (Roughage): This is the indigestible part of plant-based foods, mainly cellulose from plant cell walls. It is not absorbed by the body. Its main role is to add bulk to the faeces, making them softer and easier to pass. This stimulates the muscles of the intestine wall to contract (peristalsis), pushing food along the gut and preventing constipation. Good sources include wholemeal bread, vegetables, and fruit.
  • Water: Water makes up about 70% of the human body. It is vital for life. It acts as a solvent for chemical reactions, helps transport nutrients and waste products in the blood, and is essential for regulating body temperature through sweating.

Common pitfall

Stating that fibre is digested or provides energy for humans. Its key feature is that it is indigestible.

5. Energy Balance and Malnutrition

The energy we get from food should be balanced with the energy our body uses. Energy requirements vary depending on factors like age (growing children need more), gender (males generally need more), body size, and activity level (a manual labourer needs more than an office worker). When energy intake equals energy expenditure, body mass remains stable. Malnutrition is a broad term for ill-health caused by a poor diet. It can mean:

  • Undernutrition: Not getting enough nutrients. This can lead to conditions like Kwashiorkor, caused by severe protein deficiency, resulting in a swollen abdomen and stunted growth.
  • Overnutrition: Consuming too many calories, especially from fats and sugars. This leads to the excess energy being stored as fat, causing obesity, which increases the risk of many diseases like type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
  • Imbalanced Diet: Getting the wrong proportions of nutrients, even if the total energy is sufficient.

6. Health Risks of a Poor Diet

An unbalanced diet is a major risk factor for several non-communicable diseases.

  • Coronary Heart Disease (CHD): A diet high in saturated fats and cholesterol can lead to fatty deposits (plaques) building up inside the coronary arteries. This process, called atherosclerosis, narrows the arteries, restricting blood flow to the heart muscle. A blockage can cause a heart attack.
  • High Blood Pressure (Hypertension): Consuming too much salt (sodium) causes the body to retain water, increasing the volume of blood. This raises blood pressure, putting a strain on the heart and arteries, and increasing the risk of strokes and heart disease.
  • Tooth Decay: Sugary foods and drinks are broken down by bacteria in the mouth, producing acid. This acid dissolves the tooth enamel, leading to cavities (dental caries).
  • Type 2 Diabetes: Obesity, often resulting from a diet high in fat and sugar, is the biggest risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes. In this condition, the body either doesn't produce enough insulin or its cells stop responding to insulin.

Coronary Heart Disease (CHD): A condition where the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle become narrowed by a build-up of fatty materials.

Common pitfall

Vaguely stating 'too much fat' causes heart disease. Examiners look for the specific mention of 'saturated fat' and its role in forming plaques in arteries.
